In late 1980 and early 1981 the incidence of acute diarrhea in Oregon was unusually high (2). To cope with this situation, we needed a rapid and inexpensive diagnostic test for Campylobacter. Typically, the organism is identified biochemically and morphologically after a characteristic colony is produced by appropriate culture for 24 to 48 hours (3). We have found that simple Gram staining of direct stool smears can frequently provide an accurate and more rapid diagnosis.A prospective study of all stool specimens submitted...References1.
