Comparison of the Rayleigh wave trains of the 1966 February 21 earthquake in the South Sandwich Islands, recorded at Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and Shiraz, Iran, allows an analysis of the dispersion characteristics of the great circle path connecting these cities. Phase and group velocity measurements are closely consistent with a three-layered crustal model, about 35 km thick, along a profile which traverses central Saudi Arabian Peninsula.
