For the first time, the 2-D circular PEC cylinder coated with a uniform layer of lossy dielectric is numerically investigated. The complex propagation constants of the first three creeping wave modes are calculated for the case of a coating thickness increase from 0 to d/λ0 = 0.5. The dependence of the constants on the dielectric losses is studied and the ‘critical losses’ effect is observed for the higher order modes. It consists of leaky modes transition to trapped modes for a definite value of dielectric constant ɛ.
