Stevens and Guirao recently confirmed an earlier study demonstrating that judgments of half loudness were the same as estimates of doubling the apparent distance of the source. The explanation they offered for this equivalence is disputed, and it is suggested rather that the manner in which sound varies with distance from the source serves as the basis for loudness judgments.
