We investigate small amplitude, forced, transient flow for a rotating and stratified fluid in the presence of short scale topographic variations. In order to identify characteristics having some universality, various forms for both the topography and the forcing are employed. Geophysical interpretation of these results is directed towards mesoscale deep ocean currents forced either at the surface by atmospheric fluctuations or at the thermocline by upper ocean phenomena (such as baroclinic instability).
