This paper is a preliminary report of research being carried out into the influence of advertising in five major areas of consumer expenditure. In each case it tests the proposition that changes in advertising cause changes in consumption, employing Box—Jenkins techniques to determine the existence of causality using quarterly data during the period 1963 to 1978. No market showed advertising to have any effect upon its size.
