Do pharmacologic agents designed to limit calcium overload improve cardiac contractile function and limit cardiomyocyte calcium accumulation in adult rats following severe burn trauma?
In a rat model of severe burn trauma, agents targeting sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium release (dantrolene) and Na+/Ca2+ exchange (amiloride) provided greater cardioprotection than slow channel calcium blockers.
Should not change burn care yet; hypothesis-generating for Ca2+ modulation in trauma-induced cardiac dysfunction.

White et al. (2002) conducted an RCT in Burn trauma. Amiloride, dantrolene, diltiazem, or amlodipine vs. Vehicle (normal saline) and sham burns was evaluated on Left ventricular function, cardiomyocyte [Ca2+]i and [Na+]i, and myocyte secretion of tumor necrosis factor-alpha.
