The energy required to displace Cd atoms in CdS at 10 °K by irradiation with energetic electrons has been measured by observing the production of a cathodoluminescent band at 1.03 μm. This band is observed to increase in intensity for irradiations above a threshold of 125 keV in CdS platelets containing excess sulfur. A significant increase in the rate of growth of this band is observed above a second threshold at 314 keV which is attributed to cadmium displacements. This rate is proportional to the square of the electron beam energy near the second threshold.
