The electron field emission from a stand-alone multiwalled carbon nanotube with and without an insulator barrier has been investigated. The insulator barrier is an amorphous carbon layer formed by electron-beam-induced deposition and removed by heat treatment during the field emission in situ. In this study we investigated the effect of the insulator barrier using the same nanotube and the same experimental conditions. The results indicate that the barrier increases the turn-on voltage and decreases the slope of a current–voltage curve. This is discussed in the frame work of the Fowler–Nordheim formalism.
