An improvement to the 127 degrees energy analyser that permits considerable simplification in the construction and improves the overall performance is described. Two uniform, high resistance truncating end-plates are used to match the equipotential lines inside the analyser to the boundary conditions appropriate for the ideal case. The performance of the analyser is measured and found to be in agreement with theoretical expectations. Compact 127 degrees energy analysers are now feasible because of this design innovation.
