A comparison with recent experimental data reveals that the Task Group deposition model adequately describes total deposition during nasal breathing. Measurements made on subjects during normal breathing support the use of Pattle's (1961) empirical equation to define deposition in the nasopharyngeal compartment, but some of the new data indicate that pressure drop across the nose may be a significant parameter in nasal deposition. Although a very limited amount of data on a single subject suggests that the Task Group's model may underestimate pulmonary deposition during nasal breathing, Lippmann's (1975) extensive results on regional deposition during mouth breathing make it appear that the model generally overestimates pulmonary deposition at the expense of tracheobronchial deposition.
