Nitropropionic acid has been isolated from four higher-plant and three fungal sources. In higher plants it has been obtained from the bark of the tree Hiptagermadablota Gaertn. (Carrie, 1934), from trailing indigo Indigofera endecaphylla Jacq. Among fungi it has been found in the culture filtrates of strains ofA8pergillus8fav?hs (Bush, Goth & Dickison, 1945; Bush, Touster & Brockman, 1951; Marshall & Alexander, 1962), Aspergillus oryzae (Nakamura & Shimoda, 1954) and Penicillium atrovenetum G. Smith (Raistrick & St6ssl, 1958).
