Treatment of C57BL/6 mice with the methanol extraction residue (MER) fraction of attenuated BCG conferred marked resistance, under the appropriate parameters of administration, against leukemogenesis induced by the radiation leukemia virus. The optimal protective effects of MER treatment were manifested when first administration was at a time at which some neoplastic cells had probably already appeared. The protection optimally bestowed lasted for the life of many animals.
