Numerical computations of the full dispersion relation describing the interaction between a thin parallel beam (i.e. a beam of small transverse dimensions with drift velocity along the external axial magnetic field) and a hot magnetized plasma of finite cross-section show that the electron-cyclotron harmonic waves can be excited in several successive harmonic bands due to m=0 (Cerenkov) and M=-1 (slow cyclotron) interactions. The effect of various beam and plasma parameters on the growth and the frequency of the unstable modes is studied. For large values of beam temperature anisotropy ratio ( nu tb perpendicular to / nu tb //), instabilities due to m=1 interaction are also found to exist.
