A study has been made of nmr line narrowing at high temperatures for pure and impurity-doped camphene in the plastic phase. This phenomenon, which is usually attributed to self-diffusion, was found to be similar in characteristics to that observed in other plastic solids. The activation energies evaluated for the line narrowing process failed however to reflect the variations in this parameter observed for tracer self-diffusion and creep in camphene. Consequently, it is proposed that the line narrowing process in organic solids is not indicative of true self-diffusion.
