Nitrogen-14 nuclear quadrupole resonance spectra have been obtained from several substituted ammonium ions. The data are interpreted in terms of the electronegativity of the substituents, and a relative scale for H, CH3, NH2, NH3+, and OH is obtained. The enhanced proton-nitrogen spin-spin coupling was utilized to match unequivocally the v+ and v− spectral lines for each nitrogen-14 site.
