Constitutionally regular all‐ortho 4‐tert‐butylphenol‐formaldehyde novolac resins were prepared free from cyclic compounds, by reaction of bromomagnesium 4‐tert‐butylphenoxide in aprotic nonpolar media with paraformaldehyde. Short syntheses of dinuclear to decanuclear methylene‐linked chain oligomers were also achieved via bromomagnesium ion‐assisted reaction of suitable phenolic precursors with paraformaldehyde or 5‐tert‐butyl‐2‐hydroxybenzyl alcohol.
