On the basis of absorption, fluorescence, and thermoluminescence investigations are made of the colour behaviour of nominally undoped PbMoO4 crystals. The statistical interrelationships of the individual spectroscopic phenomena are found to play a large role. An aggregate centre consisting of Mn3+ foreign ions at Pb2+ sites and vacancies in the PbMoO4 lattice is suggested as the reason of the yellow coloration of PbMoO4 crystals.
