Caster and Armstrong (1) have described the changes in sodium, potassium, and chloride balance, as obtained by metabolism methods, in the white rat during the first 10 days after total-body irradiation with an LDS0 dose (700 r) of X-ray. An interpretation of these findings requires further insight into the nature of the electrolyte metabolism changes occurring within the different portions of the body. Such information has now been obtained by tissue analysis methods and will be discussed in terms of: (1) the extent to which electrolyte balance changes in each tissue contribute to the total-body electrolyte balance, (2) the general factors which largely determine the nature of the body fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base changes, and (3) the relationship between the concentrations of the intracellular components potassium and DNA throughout this stress period.
