Formulas of x-ray absorption cross sections for unpolarized x rays combined with circularly and linearly polarized laser beams and also for polarized x-ray and laser beams of parallel states of polarization valid for moderate laser intensities are deduced. The hindering effect of the ponderomotive potential of the intense laser field on the laser-assisted x-ray absorption near the absorption edge is predicted.
