Studies were conducted to determine the effect of Gibberella zeae (Gib) infection of corn on its utilization by chicks and rats. No differences in 7 to 25 day weight gain or feed efficiency were noted between chicks fed normal and Gib-infected corn diets. Rats fed the Gib-infected corn diet, however, grew at only 28% the rate of rats fed the normal corn diets. When rats were given a choice between the normal and Gib-corn diets, they exhibited an almost complete rejection of the Gib-corn diet after the first two days.
