On the theory of loss of coherency by spherical precipitates

An expression is derived for the equilibrium misfit of a spherical precipitate as a function of precipitate size. An expression is given for the critical precipitate radius beyond which it is energetically favourable for loss of coherency to occur. The effect of an externally applied stress on the above expressions is also considered. Experimental observations are compared with the theory and fair agreement is found.
