The theory for crystalline solids appears to be better founded than the older, intuitive theories; it should more readily lead to practically useful results than recent, rigorous theories. First, an approximate but accurate formal expression for the heat of transport is developed. A variety of ways of exploiting this expression is then discussed. It is shown that, in the harmonic model of vacancy diffusion, the theory leads to a result closely related to that of Schottky.
