Optical studies are made of the composition dependence of the colorability of mixed alkali halide crystals after X‐ray irradiation at room temperature. A pronounced minimum coloration is found at about the equimolar concentration in solid solutions of KCl–RbCl, KCl–KBr, and KBr–RbBr. The final slopes of the F‐center growth curves are smaller for the mixed crystals than for the pure components. An analysis of the results indicates that at room temperature the F‐centers are essentially formed during the initial stage of coloration.
