Data from extensive laboratory anode efficiency tests and supporting field tests illustrate the need for low impurity levels in the 6% Al—3% Zn magnesium alloy cast anodes. Data are presented which show the detrimental effects of the impurities copper, nickel, iron, lead and tin; the beneficial effect of manganese in counteracting to some extent the effects of iron and perhaps copper; the absence of any pronounced effect of aluminum and zinc in the amounts specified in this alloy; and the inertness of small additions of beryllium on the anode efficiency.
