The anomalous relaxation of powder compact density at high hydrostatic pressure up to 5 GPa has been studied by means of a strain-gauge technique. It was found that some features of the relaxation process are independent of the experimental conditions and could be regarded as properties of powder substance. Relaxation parameters for amorphous (Si₃{N}₄$) and crystalline (TiN, Fe, Ni) powders reveal similar behavior, the rate of relaxation being independent of the material from which the powder was made. A simple phenomenological model of anomalous relaxation proposed shows the close connection between the relaxation parameters and density vs pressure dependencies.
