A routine atomic absorption spectrometer has been used as a detector to monitor the effluents from a high-pressure liquid chromatograph. This rapid, plug-in combination allows the selective, high-sensitivity determination of the individual inorganic and metallorganic compounds of the element of interest, resolved by the chromatographic column. The application to the analysis of lead alkyls, both in synthetic mixtures and in commercial gasoline, is illustrated.
