Theoretical modeling demonstrates electromechanical balance laws for charged particle flow in elastic solids, indicating applications in soft electrolytes and flexible semiconductors.
A nonlinear continuum theory of the flow of charged particles in elastic solids under quasistatic electric fields is presented. It is a specialization of a fully electromagnetic theory by the same author in a previous paper which is very broad and complicated. The present paper with quasistatic electric fields is much simpler and still very useful. It is valid for strong electric fields and large deformation. It can describe the behavior of soft solid electrolytes and elastic semiconductors. The theory is constructed from a three-continuum model including a charged lattice continuum, a bound charge continuum for electric polarization, and an ideal fluid for the flow of mobile charges. The basic electromechanical balance laws are applied systematically to the model. The electric fields are in SI units.
