It is shown that exchange core polarization of a closed shell ion (Li + ) having nonzero overlap with a neighbouring paramagnetic ion (O - ) is a reasonable mechanism to explain observed negative transferred contact interactions if overlap is considered not only on the shortest (Li + -O - ) path but also on indirect ones.
