At room temperature KCl has a diamagnetic susceptibility of 1.04×{}10^-6 cgs units per cm³. The value at liquid nitrogen temperatures is {}% smaller. As the temperature is lowered further, a paramagnetic contribution inversely proportional to the temperature becomes apparent in additively or gamma-ray colored material. The magnitude of this paramagnetic contribution, which is proportional to the number of one-electron imperfection centers, is compared to the optical absorption of electron excess centers, to yield a value of 0.6 for the oscillator strength of the F band, and strong evidence that the M center is not paramagnetic. The results also indicate that the M center absorbs under the F band as well as in the M band.
