Faecal proteolysis of albumin and IgG was measured in 12 patients with ulcerative colitis or regional enteritis, in 16 patients with other gastrointestinal diseases accompanied by diarrhoea and in 5 controls. In patients with ulcerative colitis or regional enteritis faecal proteolysis of albumin was twice as high as the IgG proteolysis, whereas IgG proteolysis exceeded albumin proteolysis in the group of patients with other gastrointestinal diseases accompanied by diarrhoea. It is concluded that the differing proteolytic pattern is due to the presence of proteases with different a affinity to IgG and albumin. At the same time, the findings are indirect evidence that a preferential intestinal loss of IgG does not take place in Crohn’s disease although the degradation rate of IgG is almost invariably higher than that of albumin.
