The shapes of the copper K edge in the compounds CuCl, CuBr, CuI, Cu2O, and chalcopyrite mineral are studied using a Cauchois type X‐ray spectrograph. The electronic transitions 1s → 4s and 1s → 4p are observed in the edges. The transitions are explained on the basis of (Z + 1) analogy. It is also shown that the 4s‐4p orbital separation of an ion in a compound depends on the ionicity of the compound.
