Pulsed magnetic fields have been used to study the de Haas-van Alphen effect in Tl in the (0001) and (10{}10) planes. It is shown that the Fermi surface of thallium, while almost free-electron-like, is in better agreement with that proposed by Soven on the basis of his relativistic band-structure calculation. The effects of magnetic breakdown are discussed, and it is shown that the maximum spin-orbit splitting in the AHL plane of the Brillouin zone is {~}0.1 eV.
