Educational laboratory proposal demonstrates rate constant optimization in mixed-order parallel reactions in undergraduate courses, highlighting numerical modeling skills.
The treatment of kinetic data and its interpretation is one of the most important topics in most university courses in chemical kinetics. Data handling usually requires mastery of numerical techniques, computer programming, and statistics. In general, many university courses teach mathematics–statistics and programming without kinetic applications. For students, acquiring skills and techniques of kinetic data processing using knowledge of numerical methods and programming is important for their education. This laboratory exercise proposal aims to offer an activity that requires the use of numerical and statistical methods to solve one of the most relevant problems in chemical kinetics: the estimation of the values of constants of a reaction mechanism from experimental values. For its solution, two different approaches are proposed for its development in MATLAB. As a result of the solution of the different variants, it is possible to compare the efficiency of each of the proposed solutions and the modeling of the system over time.
