An earlier paper [1] has reported on the feasibility of a new analytical approach to the problems of optical imagery. The main basis of our method is provided by Walsh functions, a closed set of normal orthogonal functions. This paper extends the study to the case of the ‘Factor of Encircled Energy’ (FEE), which is a useful parameter for quality assessment of imaging systems. Indications are given as to the convenient amenability of the proposed analysis to the study of the twin problems of balancing of residual aberrations and aberration tolerances on a FEE-based criterion.
