Selective photolysis at room temperature of IO−4 embedded in KClO4 crystals and subsequent x irradiation at low temperature lead to formation of IO2, which may be detected by ESR. Detailed comparison of the spin Hamiltonians of ClO2, BrO2, and IO2, all trapped in KClO4, indicates that the distributions of electronic charge and spin in these molecules are very similar.
