A shock tube investigation of the dissociation of cyanogen diluted in argon is described. Dissociation rate coefficients for the reaction, C2N2+M→CN+CN+M, were obtained behind the incident shock wave over the temperature range 2700–4000°K and for mixtures containing from 0.05%–1.0% C2N2. The rate coefficients were best fitted by the expression, kD = 4.58 × 1014exp(− 69 kcal/RT) cc mole−1·sec−1. The current measurements were in good agreement with the lower temperature data of Tsang et al. and the combined data may be summarized by kD = 3.71 × 106 T1/2(E / RT)8exp(− E / RT) cc mole−1·sec−1 over the temperature range 1750–4000°K, where E = 128.7 kcal/mole.
