The optical properties of evaporated opaque films of indium, gallium and thallium have been studied in vacuum throughout the wavelength range of the visible spectrum, 0.4-0.65 μm, by a photographic method. This permitted the simultaneous measurement of the optical constants to be made immediately after evaporation. The application of a free-electron model of the metals to the results is discussed, deviations from the predicted relationships being taken to indicate the photon energies at which electron interband transitions take place.
