S D Ross London: McGraw Hill 1972 pp xii + 413 price £8 This is a very timely account of a subject of great and increasing importance, for with the extension of infrared observations to low frequency, the advent of laser Raman spectroscopy, and the use of inelastic neutron scattering, much information is now obtainable about lattice modes in crystals, and thence to the crystal force fields. Nearly all the compounds dealt with are in the crystalline – or at least solid – state, and the coverage is comprehensive.
