CeVO 4 prepared via the sol‐gel route with a tetragonal ( I 4 1 / amd ) crystal structure was found to act as an ion‐storage material. The structure of powders and films having different Ce / V molar ratios was determined using X‐ray diffractometry. Cyclic voltammograms of films allowed for distinguishing between the Ce 4 + / Ce 3 + and V 5 + / V 4 + redox changes. In situ ultraviolet/visible spectro‐ electrochemical measurements confirmed the presence of V 5 + / V 4 + redox changes in tetragonal CeVO 4 films. The small ( ∼ 0.1 to 0.5 cm 2 / C ) coloration efficiency of CeVO 4 films suggests their utilization as counter electrodes with optically passive responses in electrochromic devices.
