Glomerular mesangium cells are known to contain actomyosin and fibronectin. We found in this study that Thy-1-1 antigen was also present in rat glomerular mesangial cells. Anti rat thymocyte serum (ATS) was raised in rabbits by immunization of Wistar Imamichi rat thymocytes. After in viva administration of ATS to rats or in vfrro application of ATS to frozen rat kidney sections, ATS was found by immunohistological methods to be strictly confined to glomerular mesangium. ATS absorbed by rat thymocytes and brain homogenate failed to show such activity. Recently, mouse Thy-1-l antigen has been found in rat thymocytes, brain, and other cells. Therefore, mono-clonal Thy-l-1 antibody derived from hybrid myeloma cells was also tried in the same way. It was found that this mono-clonal antibody was also localized in the rat glomerular mesangium in vitro just like ATS. It is thus concluded that the antigen common to both glomerular mesangium and thymocyte is Thy-l-l antigen. By immunoelectron microscopic study using peroxidase labeled antibody, the site of Thy-1-l antigen localization in the mesangium was observed to be the surface of the mesangial cell.
