To study the effects of two different cycling strategies, (all-out versus 80–90% of all-out) on work-output of short duration (2 min) on the bicycle ergometer, 21 male subjects (mean wt=73.1 kg) were tested twice on separate days. Results indicated that more revolutions (and hence work-output) were accomplished under the all-out condition for 0–30 sec (205 kgm) and for 0–60 sec (115 kgm). More work (120 kgm) was completed from 30–60 sec under the pacing plan. From 60 to 120 sec there was no difference in work accomplished between the 2 conditions. The cardiovascular response to the work, as measured by heart rate response, was similar under the 2 cycling plans.
