The temperature and strain rate dependence of the critical shear stress (CSS) of neutron‐irradiated copper before and after annealing were measured between 4 and 500 °K. Measurements of the CSS of neutron‐irradiated gold are also reported. By means of electron microscopy the density and size distribution of observable defects in identically irradiated copper foils were counted. Since a fairly wide size distribution was found, the interpretation of the CSS‐measurements is not simple. The quantitative interpretation of the experimental results will be given in part II [2] on the basis of Frank's “spectrum theory” [1].
