A mortality of 21% in a commercial broiler flock between two and seven weeks of age was related to a special low-cost diet based on wheat and fish meal. In a small experimental trial of the same diet, mortality was similar. Affected birds had enlarged pale livers with fine hemorrhages, pale swollen kidneys, and pale hearts. Special histological stains indicated an unusual accumulation of fat in these organs.
