The authors propose a supercurrent-induced lattice distortion in superconductors lacking both inversion and time-reversal symmetry. They dub this the superconducting piezoelectric effect (SCPE). They demonstrate the effect for a two-dimensional Rashba superconductor under in-plane magnetic field, in which Cooper pairs have finite total momentum, and clarify the close relation between the SCPE and momentum. The SCPE is a phenomenon unique to superconductors. It could become a sensitive probe of symmetry-breaking effects and of Cooper-pair momentum in exotic superconductors.
