The dissociation kinetics of the Fe2(μ-OH)2(H2O)84+ complex was studied in aqueous solution at 25.0 °C, 1.0 M NaClO4, and pH < 3.0, by the stopped-flow method. A mechanism involving the following three pathways is proposed: (I) Fe2(μ-OH)2(H2O)84+ ⇌ 2Fe(OH)(H2O)52+; (II) Fe2(μ-OH)2(H2O)84+ + H+ ⇌ Fe(OH)(H2O)52+ + Fe(H2O)63+; (III) Fe2(μ-OH)2(H2O)84+ ⇌ Fe2(μ-OH)2(OH)(H2O)73+ + H+; Fe2(μ-OH)2(OH)(H2O)73+ ⇌ Fe(OH)(H2O)52+ + Fe(OH)2(H2O)42+.
