Abstract

A model is proposed for photo-and thermally induced processes in lithium niobate crystals. The model is based on the presence of structural defects formed as a result of departure of the crystal composition from stoichiometry. Defects of the type Nb Li -Nb Li are introduced and the influence of oxidation-reduction heat treatment on the optical characteristics of the crystals is analyzed.
