This is the first in a series of three articles describing the results of the US Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration Medical Surveillance Survey conducted in 1990 to 1991. The complete research effort included a telephone survey of 7177 establishments, a follow-on survey of 238 establishments with medical surveillance programs (Phase II), and 25 site visits to locations with programs (Phase III). This article discusses the extent and type of medical surveillance programs found in US industry.
