The two-dimensional metal–organic framework [Cu(terephthalate)(NHMe2)2] (1) has been prepared by solvothermal synthesis and characterised by X-ray diffraction. [1, monoclinic, P21/c, a = 10.276(3), b = 9.891(2), c = 13.244(3) Å, β = 90.573(5)°, V = 1346.1(6) Å3, T = 120(5) K, R1 = 0.065]. The product has arisen as a result of a hydrolysis reaction of the DMF solvent. Compound 1 adopts a compressed 44 network based upon dinuclear Cu2 nodes and is unusual in containing coordinated dimethylamine ligands. The propensity for and consequences of hydrolysis reactions such as this are discussed.
