However, we have found that when a set of areas is identified in which most species of some higher taxa (e.g., all terrestrial vertebrates) are represented, species of unrelated taxa (e.g., burrerflies or trees) are represented nearly as well as when areas arc selected for those taxa alone (Kiester et al. in press). This result hinges on the critical difference between selecting areas of high richness hot spots, and selecting areas in which most or all species arc represented. Areas selected in the larrer case are complementary to one another
